Ayurvedic Yoga Therapeutic Massage
Kusum Modak Method
Developed by the esteemed master, Kusum Modak, Ayurvedic Yoga Therapeutic Massage (AYTM) is a technique which combines Iyengar yoga with the therapeutic aspects of massage and ayurveda. Transformative by nature, AYTM engages the client and therapist in a partnership to realign and support the body’s natural state, which often becomes distorted throughout life due to stress, physical and emotional distress, poor posture, inadequate nutrition, etc. The main focus of any session is blood circulation, conscious breathing, and the movement of vital energy by utilizing therapist assisted postures, deep stretches, and traction. AYTM is designed to promote balance between the nervous, respiratory, & circulatory systems while improving muscle tone and range of motion. Other benefits include elimination of toxins, strengthening the immune system, and increased hydration and elasticity of the skin. The technique is most effective when the client commits to at least six sessions over the course of several weeks, with maintenance sessions thereafter. AYTM is a powerful tool for change, challenging the client’s mind, body, and spirit to return to a state of health and vitality.
Therapist training conducted by Laura Branco
At the age of 40, Kusum Modak had two meetings that would completely transform her life: the first was with B. K. S. Iyengar, one of the most recognized yoga masters in India and worldwide. Kusum became Master Iyengar’s disciple, thus initiating a disciplined path, and practiced for more than 20 years at his institute in Pune, Maharashtra in India.
The second meeting, which was a milestone in Kusum’s life, was with Mr. Limaye , a simple man with deep knowledge of the art of massage. With great sensitivity and wisdom, he sparked a powerful healing force in Kusum by introducing her to the ways of massage. For a year and a half Kusum accompanied him daily, watching amazing healings. In many cases, the people had long histories of trying various treatments and surgeries. Thereafter, Mr. Limaye put Kusum on intensive practice under his supervision, and before he died, he professed: “I am sure that you will develop this work and spread it to the world,” and he was right!
Kusum inherited from her master an honest, direct and clear way to express herself by sharing this treasure that is a blend of simplicity and sophistication. Kusum, as the Hindu tradition of ‘Parampara” (direct transference from Master to disciple) has appointed Laura Branco as the continuation of her legacy training therapists in India and the world. During Laura’s trainings in India Kusum comes to meet us, bless and spark us with her fiery spirit.
